About

Me

Originally from Yorkshire, I made the move to Edinburgh in 2017. I changed my job too as it looked like a bit too much of a commute. I’m very often found in various charity shops looking for books and bargains, being a tourist in the city with my son making the worlds greatest Yorkshire Puddings. (Not even a boast, it’s a truth.)

Running

In May 2012 I decided I wanted to be a runner. I was 30, unfit and wanting to do something about it (the unfit thing, only changed being 30 when I turned 31.)

As a way of keeping myself motivated and accountable for my plans to become a runner I started this blog and started writing all my training and failings and how I was getting along with it all.

Since then I’ve run 11 full marathons, a handfull of half marathons and somewhere in the region of 50 10km races. (I keep meaning to working out just how many but counting medals is similar to counting sheep and I nap easily.)

I post all my runs using Strava, and if you want to follow me on there you can find me under Marc Hemingway. As that’s my name.

Writing

The only thing I’ve ever really wanted to do with my life is become a writer. (And a wrestler, but I don’t like getting hit.) I don’t write as much I should be though and so I decided that blogging helped me with running motivation, it could possibly do the same for my writing.

Currently I write features for Hooked On Wrestling but am working on a novel and a book of short stories at the same time, with ideas for a couple more novels hiding away at the back of my mind.

  2. Hey, thanks for stopping by my little blog. I really like yours – you have a good style of writing, and all the best fitness blogs have a bit of a goal, a bit of a story. Nice one – am now signed up so looking forward to hearing more from you!

  3. Good to see you at ‘Anecdotage’ today. I used to be a runner, until the joints gave up! Now I cycle, Zumba & things, but I’ll keep an eye on your progress! 😉

  4. Thank you for the like. It is very encouraging. Love the murals. Good luck with the running. I started running in the 1970s after an op’, it gets to be part of your life. These days it’s a lot of walking with a bit of jogging at times. Hang in there.

  5. hemingwayrun, thanks for liking my blog post! Mine is in its infancy, so hopefully lots of improvements and progress to come. I checked out your blog, good stuff! Love that you support animal charities, keep up the good work! -first26.2, first262.wordpress.com

  6. You stopped by my page earlier – I love this blog. It’s such an inspiration and not just for running or weight loss! Well done for all the great work, wish I could join your journey, but I’ll be checking back to see how you get on. Good luck!

  8. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’ve been writing my blog since March of last year, after I broke my foot on a trail run. I’ve run a half since then and plan on running some more half marathons and a marathon this year. I look forward to reading more on your running adventure. I ride a bicycle too – yeah, let me know how just sitting on your saddle goes. 🙂

  9. Thanks for looking at my blog. Was it ‘green gym’ that caught your eye? Sorry!! I’m an ex-runner and gym-goer. I started running for my 50th birthday and eventually got my PB down to 10k in 60mins. It took 4 years!! Hence moving to a more relaxing form of exercise.

Good luck with your running and I look forward to hearing about both your 1/2 marathons and your first full marathon which won’t be far behind, I bet.

  10. One foot in front of the other and making goals to challenge yourself is the best motivator. I started running in 2007 just to try something different and it was a form of exercise that was ‘free’ and I didn’t have to have a gym membership to do so. Now I love running and the feeling I get before and after a race. I have no desire to run a full marathon and will stick to a half. They are still a good challenge and my goal is to beat my PB. Keep up the good work and thanks for checking out my blog. Happy running.

  11. I’m not a runner but now and again I use a 5k to provide a new challenge. It certainly provides that. I love lifting but the running is tough. Nice that you’ve done so well with it!

  12. Hey, thanks for stopping by my blog (shefliesagain). I am most delighted to read of your adventures here. How motivating! Got me thinking how I’d like to do something like this, too! Keep it up & keep writing about it all.

  13. Glad you liked “shoulder chip,” and hope other quips fit your interests and/or concerns. Thanks for your support.

  14. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I love that you’re in running for the t-shirts and medals. What a fun approach to running and reason enough to stay motivated.

  15. Fantastic! Thanks for visiting my log. I wish you success and more in 3013!

  16. Thank you for stopping by simplydaisies again!

  17. Hi, there! I wanted to let you know that I nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award. The fact that you are going to cover 2013 miles this year for charity is simply wonderful, and inspiring. What a great way to the change in the world! Check out my post here: http://willbfit.wordpress.com/2013/02/11/award-time/

  18. Glad to know I’m not the only one thinking like this, but got to hand it to you, you’ve taken running and writing to a level – early days for me, but determined to keep it up!

  19. Half Marathons are great. I’ve done two and am planning on doing another this April (Angus Half Marathon) as part of my Marathon training. I’ve always wanted to do a marathon..on my things to do before list. Hence why I’ve entered Edinburgh this year. Maybe you will get the “marathon” bug later. 🙂
Good luck with your Half this year.

  20. Thank you for stopping by simplydaisies!

Liebster Award, thank you Jenny and Tina!

  22. Hej from Sweden !
Thanks for stopping by my blog and liking a recent post!
You are most welcome back anytime!
A bit late , but, Happy New Year!

  23. Thanks for dropping in on my blog! Looks like you’re kicking bottom at every turn – it’s great to see! I’m hoping to be able to find more runs to participate in this year, so perhaps I’ll take up your challenge of 2014 in 2014! Additionally, I can very much relate to discussions with the voice inside your head – mine can also be a bastard, but I try to think on it much like a TARDIS in that it doesn’t take me where I want to go but it always gets me where I need to be. Sadly, it’s not actually bigger on the inside.

  24. HI. Thank you for visiting my blog and liking my post. All the best to you. 🙂 Renee

  25. I am so glad that I checked out your blog after you liked my post on upcoming races! Congratulations on being featured in Freshly Pressed (it is such an honor and something I will be striving for). Also, I just want to thank you for being inspirational…I think it is truly amazing all that you are doing and love that you are giving back to a charity of your choice as well. Good luck in reaching 2013 in 2013!

  26. Hey there aspirer, thanks for the “like” on thesaltwatertwin. The very best of luck on your ambitious endeavors!

  27. Couch potato to runner bean…love it! I started running (again) using NHS Couch to 5K running programme and am very happy about where I am. I’ll be keeping up to date with your blog!

  28. Thanks for liking my blog. http://marilynsmarathonmindsets.wordpress.com
I love to hear how runners cope with all the day to day stuff, and motivate themselves. Great that from such a sudden decision you have changed such a big part of your life and its only been in a relatively few months! Think how much your physique and health will have changed in a year.

  29. Cheers for the Like, mate. I’ve started following your blog.

  30. Thanks for stopping by my blog and liking the post about my trail run! I loved looking around your blog…the inspiration pictures are awesome, and your 2013 goal is amazing!! I hope it all goes well for you!! Keep up the great work! 🙂

    Hope

  31. First of all, Hemingway is one of my favourite authors. Second, I used to live in a town between Durham and Newcastle; I am very familiar with the Great North Run and would love to head “home” to do it myself one day. Great blog, please keep in touch!

  32. You are a runner! And an artist!! I’d love to be both. Great to see people working towards their goals – and succeeding! Thanks for stopping by my blog and being part of the journey to stardom!

  33. Thanks for stopping by my blog & well done on the GNR! It’s a great event, though got a bit too busy for me after a while. I need to look out for some more local things, used to do a bunch of 10k races around west yorkshire years back but need to get back into it. Leeds half? Maybe… 🙂

  34. Thanks for liking my blog!
I love the reason for starting your blog! Do you ever do any endurance training? It helps with stamina and speed when in longer runs… you should look into it and try do one endurance a week. There are many online; the one I do is run 100m, jog 100m x 5 (so, 1km in total). Rest for 2 minutes. Repeat 4 times (so 4km’s in total).
Good luck with your runs – it’s addictive and throughly enjoyable!!

  35. “No real plans to run a marathon as of yet, so stop asking.” I feel the same way…the question gets annoying, doesn’t it?!

  36. Hey, so glad you found me! Just got back from a bit of a ‘sucky’ run and felt like “What am I doing?!!!” Then I saw your blog and realized I’m in good company and we’re all trying to kick butt. Hope all is well with your running…I’m getting ready for my first 1/2 in Jan. I’ll be following you…best wishes!

  37. Hey, another writer/runner! Awesome!

  38. Thanks for stopping by my blog! I’m glad I found yours – keep up the great running. I just followed you 🙂

  39. I love that you are in it for the t-shirts and medals. Now I haven’t received a medal yet – but I have TOO many t-shirts (its time to clean out the drawer). Good luck on your next race 🙂

  40. Thanks for stopping by my blog – I can’t wait to read your story and take some of your commitment and inspiration to help me get off the couch on the cold dark days! Well done on your journey!

  41. Hello! I nominated you for an “Inspiring Blogger Award” 🙂 I hope you will accept my nomination. Check back to my page for guidelines of accepting.

  46. Wishing you the best on your run from Roseville, California!

  47. Thanks for dropping by! Good luck to you in your half, what in two weeks? I bet you’re getting really excited! Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and if your mind starts to play tricks on you, tell it to get lost, you’re busy running. 🙂

  48. Good luck with your first half! I’m sure you will do great and want to run further distance the next time! I’m running my 2nd half in October, then I’m ready to train for a full

  49. Love this! Way to go… looks like we’re on the same journey. Will be checking back to see how your run goes next month!
