Stupid Tracker App

UPDATED – Progress

Does anyone else have problems with the GPS tracker app on their phone/iPod/what-not? A few times I’ve been out and when I’ve got back the tracker says I’ve run a lot further and/or quicker than I actually have.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d LOVE to believe those stats but know deep down that they’re fake. FAKE!

Yesterday I ran 3 miles in 28minutes. The tracker says I ran 4 miles in 28 minutes. Further than that, it says my first mile was run at a pace of 28.7mph. After that it drops off a bit (must’ve been tired from the sprint.) I know that using the tracker isn’t essential, it still keeps an accurate time and I normally map out my run on so I know what distance I’m doing, but I like looking at the stats.

I thought that it might be the wifi on my phone interfering with the GPS, so tried yesterdays run with wifi switched off. Still messed up. I now think that it might be because I was listening to music through my phone at the same time, so tomorrow I’ll use my iPod instead of phone and see if that helps any.

  1. I use Runkeeper on Android, with network data and GPS on and wifi off. Have been out about 7 times and only run 1.25 miles (am slowly extending my reach) but results are consistent.

  2. I use endomondo on my iPhone to track runs/rides. Not sure if that’s any use to you, but as yet I’ve not had a problem with it tracking…

  3. I sometimes use the MapMyRun app and it messed up horribly this week! Tuesday It said my first mile was in 3.5 minutes and that the whole course was 4.44 miles in 29:14 when I actually ran 3 miles. I have been considering a Garmin for sometime but don’t want to get bogged down with too much equipment. One of my favorite things about running is that you can just grab your shoes and go.

  4. I bought a Garmin too in the end. I think mines a 205. It really does do the job. I was initially wary of the cost (somewhere around £150 at the time) but it has been fantastic and if you’re serious about keeping running it lasts for years.

  5. I used runkeeper a few times got so annoyed with it I went and bought a Garmin 110 forerunner watch. I know this isn’t a cheap fix but it stores all my runs and is accurate. It’s not let me down yet. I can justify the cost as I use it 4 to 5 times a week and it really helps me see how I’m progressing. Sorry I can’t be more help but that’s what I did and it worded for me.

    • Any advice is welcomed! How much did it set you back? I’ve just been thinking on it, and I’m sure it’s never messed up when I’ve been running with someone else, because didn’t listen to music… My theory will be tested tomorrow!

      • 120 ish from amazon the Garmin GPS ones do work well. Then I can just use my phone as an mp3 player whilst out works well for me anyway and if you are doing plenty of exercise it will help you get better and you can see stuff like cals burnt ,distances ,heart rate and pace etc and you can go online and compare previous workouts. You won’t look back I love mine its great 🙂
